Abstract
Objectives: Indicators of the change processes of adults who stutter (AWS) should be multi-dimensional as stuttering is a multi-dynamic disorder. In addition change processes need to be long-term, as various overt and covert features need to be targeted in stuttering treatment. The primary purposes of the current study were to determine long-term change processes in both the overt and covert features of AWS who received individualized stuttering treatment. Moreover individualized change patterns of the participants were also investigated.

Methods: The change processes of 8 AWS were determined in the current study. The participants received individualized stuttering treatment once a week. The locus of causality was determined bi-weekly during the first 3 months of treatment. In addition to the locus of causality measure, Paradise-Fluency Assessment-II obligatory tasks and communication attitude test, the Locus of Control of Behavior, and the Subjective Screening of Stuttering-Revised were conducted at the beginning, 3 months and 6 months of treatment.

Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the Paradise-Fluency Assessment-II communication attitude test and general Pawn scores. However most of the other overt and covert measures showed desirable, but non-significant change patterns. In addition the participants showed individualized change patterns.

Conclusion: These results suggest that the change processes of AWS are individualized and slow-tempoed in individualized stuttering treatment. Accordingly, long-term and individualized change plans are required in the treatment of AWS.
